Spotlight Article on West Berkeley Family Practice
History: The building housing West Berkeley Family Practice has a nearly 100-year history of serving the local community.
The site is a City of Berkeley landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The older part of the building, with an address at 2031 Sixth St., was constructed in 1927 for the Berkeley Day Nursery, started by a group of prominent Berkeley women to provide daycare for the children of low-income working mothers. Since becoming a part of LMC about 45 years ago, West Berkeley has ensured access to quality healthcare services for our community, including our underserved and underinsured populations. Spotlight on Downtown Oakland Health Center:
DOC was created to be the home base for LifeLong’s Supportive Housing Program (SHP) and to serve the immediate community in inner-city Oakland. The clinic was launched in 2003 as a satellite office for SHP providers and five years later started offering walk-in services.
Today the clinic serves several SROs that are within blocks of the site. Says Dr. Susan Ferguson, SHP’s Associate Medical Director: “DOC includes a team of medical providers who go out and provide in-home medical care to folks living in SROs and other sites including board and care homes for people with mental illness, shelters, and in substance abuse recovery programs, including EBCRP (East Bay Community Recovery Program).” To read the full spotlight article, click here.
