LGBTQ Pride Month: Better Late Than Never

By Elaine Herscher, Senior Editor

Our celebration of LGBTQ Pride continues, and it turns out you’re never too old to come out.

Maybelle Blair, a trailblazing women’s baseball player who inspired the film “A League of their Own,” came out as a lesbian two years ago at age 95, and multiple stories about her are making the rounds this month.

Blair, who played for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, pitched for the Peoria Redwings in 1948. She came out at the Tribecca Film Festival when the “League of their Own” series was unveiled.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for these young girl ball players to come to realize that they’re not alone, and you don’t have to hide,” she said. “I hid for 75, 85 years, and this is actually basically the first time I’ve ever come out.” In the original film, Madonna played Blair’s character and was known as “All The Way Mae,” as Blair was called during her baseball days.

Blair’s not alone in a late-in-life sexuality reveal. Last month, Bruce Joel Rubin, the screenwriter for the 1990s movie “Ghost,” came out as gay. He’s a relatively young 81. Rubin came out in his recently published memoir, “It’s Only a Movie.”

“I’ve never not been gay,” he said in an interview with the Guardian. “I don’t like that I was closeted for so long. But it would just have confused people.”

Rubin and his wife Blanche have remained married for nearly 50 years, and he said he recently came out to his children and grandchildren. “I didn’t want to leave this world with any secrets,” he said.

This Pride month, we at LifeLong are highlighting the positive achievements of the LGBTQ community. We recognize there are battles being fought for LGBTQ rights across the nation, and we’re highlighting a few of the victories as well as celebrating everything Pride is about.
