Reflections on My First Week and Looking Ahead

Dear LifeLong Medical Care Team,

My first week as your CEO has been insightful and rewarding. From the heartwarming welcome at Berkeley Dental to the eye-opening experience on our mobile health van, every moment has been filled with learning and meaningful connections.

At Berkeley Dental Care, I witnessed firsthand the impact of our work. Hearing about a patient who can now eat solid foods and one who smiles confidently in family photos touched me deeply. These stories are not just anecdotes – they are the essence of our mission.

My visit to the West Berkeley Health Center on Wednesday further illuminated the breadth of our services. Then came Thursday’s mobile van ride-along – a sobering yet inspiring experience that brought home the urgency of our work treating all patients with compassion and passion.

Throughout the week, I was struck by the dedication of our long-serving staff members. Your commitment, whether you’ve been here for five years or 25, shines through in every patient interaction that I witnessed.

Friday’s AmeriCorps graduation was another highlight, which showcased our nine Health Fellows who embody LifeLong’s spirit of service. State Senator Nancy Skinner’s presence highlighted the crucial role of government partnerships in advancing health equity through legislation and funding. I am thrilled that several fellows will be transitioning to permanent roles at LifeLong, allowing us to retain their valuable skills and fresh perspectives.

In related news, the challenges we face were underscored by a recent New York Times article (read more) featuring our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Stacey. The end of the CDC’s Bridge Access Program poses significant hurdles for our uninsured and underinsured communities, especially during National Immunization Awareness Month. It is especially troubling that this is happening at a time when we emphasize the importance of vaccines. This situation only strengthens my resolve to advocate for equitable healthcare access.

As we move forward, I’m reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.” Let these words fuel our mission.

In the coming weeks, my visits will continue as I am eager to listen, learn, and connect with each of you. Your experiences and insights are invaluable as we shape LifeLong’s future together.

Thank you for your warm welcome. I’m excited and honored to be on this journey with you, united in our commitment to community health.

Warm regards,

Cecilia Aviles, MBA, BSN, RN
