Why LifeLong is Different

  • Training Future Providers: In addition to offering the highest quality care, LifeLong is an academic institution, training future providers to practice community medicine. Our Family Medicine Residency, Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship, LCSW Field Placement Internship and Community Health Worker Apprenticeship prepare  to deliver compassionate care to underserved communities.
  • Professional Development: LifeLong is committed to the professional growth of all of our employees. We offer financial support to pursue professional development and career advancement.
  • Community Engagement: When you join LifeLong, you become part of a team dedicated to providing an array of services to the most medically underserved people in our communities. We partner with many community-based organizations and go out into the community to provide health education, increase access to care, and engage with patients and other community members where they work, live and play.

Words from Our Team

LifeLong feels like home. Our foundation is community. We have patients who come in who we’ve known for 20 years, and we have seen them come in with their grandchildren, and now their grandchildren are adults. What keeps me going is really providing quality healthcare to our patients. Sometimes I don’t think the patients know they deserve it. But we know they do deserve it and want to provide the best possible care we can for people.

Dominica Zone
Center Director, East Oakland, Eastmont and Eden Heath Centers

My most rewarding experience has been when helping a patient see a doctor for the first time with health coverage. Those patients bring me to tears. My second most rewarding experience has been when we hire a new patient advocate, and I get to teach them everything I know. It’s like passing the torch.

Mayra Bolaj
Enrollment Manager

It is gratifying to see patients return over the years and feel like they have been helped, which gives me a feeling of fulfillment. The relationships I have been able to build with patients and colleagues have also been part of the reason why I remain here.

Carmela Asig
Medical Assistant 2, Family Medicine Residency Program

I think LifeLong can be a good fit for so many different types of primary care clinicians with varied interests who are really committed to the wellness of the whole patient and the opportunity to serve vulnerable communities. I love the joy and resiliency that people bring to doing hard work for the community, and I love that we feel like such a family who are really in this together.

Dr. Samali Lubega
Physician East Oakland Health Center & HIV Lead Specialist

We want patients to feel as though they matter and that the work that we do is going to help them on their journey in life. So if you’re a really resourceful person, someone who likes challenges, we’re a pretty positive group of folks. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re going to have laughs in the process of solving the problem.

Dr. Miriam Parker
Chief Dental Officer

With the patient population we serve, I know I made the right decision. I’m working with Medical Assistants, some of whom were patients themselves at the clinic before. It’s just nice to work with people who are very passionate and have returned to serve the community that has shaped who they are today.

Dr. Semera Shemsu
Family Medicine Resident, Class of 2025

Working at LifeLong, when you help people it’s more gratifying and you get more out of life by helping others. If you see someone that smiles if you made their job easier, it just makes me feel good about myself and feel good about what I do.
